Angie Andrews Torain 鈥�94 came to 芒果77福利 to play basketball, having been a standout player in high school. But after her first year, she decided to focus solely on academics.聽

鈥淚 think I was a better high school player than college,鈥� she said. 鈥淐ollege is definitely more elite, more challenging. I was trying to adjust to a rigorous academic life at 芒果77福利 and something had to give.鈥�

The sociology major鈥檚 decision in favor of academics paid off; three years after graduating from 芒果77福利, she earned a law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

Throughout her subsequent career, academics and athletics have converged.

On July 1, she became director of athletics and recreation at the University of Chicago after spending more than four years at the University of Notre Dame, most recently as senior associate athletics director for culture, diversity and engagement.

She previously worked as associate commissioner of the Summit League, a Division I conference of Midwestern schools, and deputy athletic director at the University of the Incarnate Word.聽

Torain was drawn to sports administration because of its connection to student-athletes.

鈥淚 know what it feels like to go somewhere and maybe not feel like you fit in,鈥� she said. 鈥淎nd sports has been the way to get through and experience the things in life that you couldn't experience on your own because of social economics, or whatever the case may be.聽鈥�

鈥淓veryone needs someone to champion them, because college is hard, but it鈥檚 rewarding, too.鈥�

While most of Torain鈥檚 Notre Dame job was to ensure the university complies with NCAA and conference rules, she also oversaw diversity and inclusion work, in which she provided programming about biases and safe conversations and urged student-athletes and coaches who wished to make a difference to focus on the impact of their actions.

鈥淔rom the diversity and inclusion standpoint after everything with George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, our student athletes were at a tipping point, and wanted to be more active in the community,鈥� she said.

鈥溾�� My role is not to say, 鈥楴o, you can鈥檛 do it,鈥� but let鈥檚 talk about the impact. Is there anybody from campus that can help us with this? Is there another team that can help us?聽 How do we get into the community?鈥欌��

Torain described that the process as heartbreaking but also rewarding, as she witnessed the Notre Dame campus focusing on diversity and change.聽

She foresees positive changes for women in the sports arena, though they have been slow in coming despite the requirements of Title IX. 鈥淚t鈥檚 2021 and we still can't get that right,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 saddening. You see it across the country.聽

鈥淗opefully our children will be smarter and get into those positions where they can actually make the change where we couldn鈥檛,鈥� she said. The next generation 鈥� including her three daughters, ages 25, 20 and 14 鈥� 鈥渋s a lot bolder. They鈥檝e found their voice a lot quicker than I did.鈥�

Her daughters all are volleyball players. The oldest played in Division I; her middle daughter, Division II; and the youngest hopes to play in high school.

Torain said she has told them, 鈥測ou can play as many sports as you want.鈥� But she also passed along a lesson she learned after her first year at 芒果77福利: 鈥淟et's make sure academics are first and then everything else will follow.鈥�
